What is the conversion factor between micrometers and nanometers?

A conversion factor is used to change the units of a measured quantity without changing its value. It represents the ratio (or fraction) that expresses the relationship between two different units. A conversion factor is always equal to 1.

The relationship between micrometers and nanometers is 1000, such as:

1 μm = 1000 nm

Following the formula above, we can see that there are 1000 nanometers for every micrometer, and for every nanometer, there are 11000 micrometers (0.001 μm).

To convert from micrometers to nanometers, we turn our formula into a conversion factor that is equal to 1.

1000 nm1 μm = 1 μm1000 nm= 1

Both these fractions are equal to 1. The numerator and the denominator are equivalent, they are just expressed in different units.

Because we are converting from micrometer to nanometer, we will use the first fraction: 1000 nm1 μm so that micrometers are canceled out. We then multiply the value in micrometers by this fraction to get the result in nanometers (see example).

Note that μm is in the denominator (bottom) of the conversion factor. This is important, you always want to have the unit you are converting from at the bottom and the unit you are converting to in the numerator (top).

You will find below how to use this ratio to convert from μm to nm. Just remember for now that the conversion factor for converting from micrometers to nanometers is:

1000 nm1 μm

Which is bigger, a micrometer or a nanometer?

When it comes to measurements, there can be some confusion over which is bigger, a micrometer or an nanometer. To find out which one is larger, we must first convert one unit to the other and then compare them.

  • 1 μm = 1000 nm
  • 1000 nanometers is bigger than 1 nanometer.
  • 1 micrometer is, therefore, bigger than 1 nanometer.
  • To be more specific, a nanometer is 1000 times smaller than a micrometer.

How to convert micrometers to nanometers?

Multiplying any value by 1 will get you the same value back. You can do that one time or multiple times.

For example:

  • 50 x 1 = 50
  • 231 x 1 x 1 x 1 = 231

Multiplying by 1 is the first step in any unit conversion problem. The second step is to replace the number 1 with the conversion factor that is also equal to 1.

For example, if we want to convert 10 micrometers into nanometers we multiply 10 μm by the conversion factor of 1000 nm1 μm

10 μm = 10 μm x 1 = 10 μm x 1000 nm1 μm = 10000 nm

By replacing the number 1 with the conversion factor, micrometers are canceled out and we get the result in nanometers. And since the conversion factor is equal to 1, multiplying it with the original value won't change its magnitude and will only change its unit.

Based on this, we can conclude that 10 micrometers are equal to 10000 nanometers.

Remember:

  • When converting from micrometers to nanometers, we use 1000 nm1 μm as a conversion factor.

Practice: micrometers to nanometers conversion

Try answering the following questions without using our custom conversion calculator. Knowing how to convert manually between micrometers and nanometers could prove to be useful, so give it a shot. Once you are confident you can convert micrometers to nanometers, there is no harm then in taking full advantage of the tools available to you.

How to convert 38 micrometers to nanometers?

We multiply 38 by the factor of 1

38 μm = 38 μm x 1

We replace the number 1 with the conversion factor for micrometers to nanometers

38 μm = 38 μm x 1000 nm1 μm

We multiply 38 micrometers by the conversion factor. Having micrometers in the denominator allows us to cancel out the undesired units (μm) leaving only nanometers in the final result.

38 μm = 38 μm x 1000 nm1 μm
38 μm = 38 x 10001 nm
38 μm = 38000 nm

Answer: There are 38000 nanometers in 38 micrometers

How many nanometers are in 400 micrometers?

Multiply 400 by the conversion factor. Make sure the unwanted unit (μm) is in the denominator.

400 μm = 400 μm x 1000 nm1 μm

This allows us to cancel out the micrometers (μm) and leave the nanometers (nm)

400 μm = 400 μm x 1000 nm1 μm
400 μm = 400 x 10001 nm
400 μm = 400000 nm

Answer: There are 400000 nanometers in 400 micrometers
