What is the conversion factor between millimeters and micrometers?

A conversion factor is used to change the units of a measured quantity without changing its value. It represents the ratio (or fraction) that expresses the relationship between two different units. A conversion factor is always equal to 1.

The relationship between millimeters and micrometers is 1000, such as:

1 mm = 1000 μm

Following the formula above, we can see that there are 1000 micrometers for every millimeter, and for every micrometer, there are 11000 millimeters (0.001 mm).

To convert from millimeters to micrometers, we turn our formula into a conversion factor that is equal to 1.

1000 μm1 mm = 1 mm1000 μm= 1

Both these fractions are equal to 1. The numerator and the denominator are equivalent, they are just expressed in different units.

Because we are converting from millimeter to micrometer, we will use the first fraction: 1000 μm1 mm so that millimeters are canceled out. We then multiply the value in millimeters by this fraction to get the result in micrometers (see example).

Note that mm is in the denominator (bottom) of the conversion factor. This is important, you always want to have the unit you are converting from at the bottom and the unit you are converting to in the numerator (top).

You will find below how to use this ratio to convert from mm to μm. Just remember for now that the conversion factor for converting from millimeters to micrometers is:

1000 μm1 mm

Which is bigger, a millimeter or a micrometer?

When it comes to measurements, there can be some confusion over which is bigger, a millimeter or an micrometer. To find out which one is larger, we must first convert one unit to the other and then compare them.

  • 1 mm = 1000 μm
  • 1000 micrometers is bigger than 1 micrometer.
  • 1 millimeter is, therefore, bigger than 1 micrometer.
  • To be more specific, a micrometer is 1000 times smaller than a millimeter.

How to convert millimeters to micrometers?

Multiplying any value by 1 will get you the same value back. You can do that one time or multiple times.

For example:

  • 31 x 1 = 31
  • 925 x 1 x 1 x 1 = 925

Multiplying by 1 is the first step in any unit conversion problem. The second step is to replace the number 1 with the conversion factor that is also equal to 1.

For example, if we want to convert 0.001 millimeters into micrometers we multiply 0.001 mm by the conversion factor of 1000 μm1 mm

0.001 mm = 0.001 mm x 1 = 0.001 mm x 1000 μm1 mm = 1 μm

By replacing the number 1 with the conversion factor, millimeters are canceled out and we get the result in micrometers. And since the conversion factor is equal to 1, multiplying it with the original value won't change its magnitude and will only change its unit.

Based on this, we can conclude that 0.001 millimeters are equal to 1 micrometers.

Remember:

  • When converting from millimeters to micrometers, we use 1000 μm1 mm as a conversion factor.

Practice: millimeters to micrometers conversion

Try answering the following questions without using our custom conversion calculator. Knowing how to convert manually between millimeters and micrometers could prove to be useful, so give it a shot. Once you are confident you can convert millimeters to micrometers, there is no harm then in taking full advantage of the tools available to you.

How to convert 40 millimeters to micrometers?

We multiply 40 by the factor of 1

40 mm = 40 mm x 1

We replace the number 1 with the conversion factor for millimeters to micrometers

40 mm = 40 mm x 1000 μm1 mm

We multiply 40 millimeters by the conversion factor. Having millimeters in the denominator allows us to cancel out the undesired units (mm) leaving only micrometers in the final result.

40 mm = 40 mm x 1000 μm1 mm
40 mm = 40 x 10001 μm
40 mm = 40000 μm

Answer: There are 40000 micrometers in 40 millimeters

How many micrometers are in 555 millimeters?

Multiply 555 by the conversion factor. Make sure the unwanted unit (mm) is in the denominator.

555 mm = 555 mm x 1000 μm1 mm

This allows us to cancel out the millimeters (mm) and leave the micrometers (μm)

555 mm = 555 mm x 1000 μm1 mm
555 mm = 555 x 10001 μm
555 mm = 555000 μm

Answer: There are 555000 micrometers in 555 millimeters
