How to convert nautical miles to miles?

Multiplying any value by 1 will get you the same value back. You can do that one time or multiple times.

For example:

  • 34 x 1 = 34
  • 427 x 1 x 1 x 1 = 427

Multiplying by 1 is the first step in any unit conversion problem. The second step is to replace the number 1 with the conversion factor that is also equal to 1.

For example, if we want to convert 16093.4 nautical miles into miles we multiply 16093.4 nmi by the conversion factor of 1852 mi1609.344 nmi

16093.4 nmi = 16093.4 nmi x 1 = 16093.4 nmi x 1852 mi1609.344 nmi = 18520 mi

By replacing the number 1 with the conversion factor, nautical miles are canceled out and we get the result in miles. And since the conversion factor is equal to 1, multiplying it with the original value won't change its magnitude and will only change its unit.

Based on this, we can conclude that 16093.4 nautical miles are equal to 18520 miles.

Remember:

  • When converting from nautical miles to miles, we use 1852 mi1609.344 nmi as a conversion factor.
